I have had the same thing happen to me, and always insist on either payment, or removal. I now always put my watermark right across the part of my photo most difficult to clone out. You may ask if that detracts from peoples enjoyment of my photos, and the answer has to be "yes....a little", but other photographers surely understand why it is there, and see beyond the watermark and still enjoy the image.
